Dr Yen Cheng is a highly qualified ophthalmologist with advanced subspecialty training in glaucoma and cataract surgery.

She graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2011, and also completed a Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) in bioenergetic neuroprotection in animal and cell models of glaucoma. Her early commitment to research was recognised as a Florey Medical Science Research Scholar and a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society.

Furthering her academic journey, Dr Cheng obtained a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmic Science from the University of Sydney, where her research focused on the treatment of microbial keratitis in the Australian population.

She completed her ophthalmology training through the Sydney Eye Hospital network, and served as thea Senior Ophthalmology Registrar at The Canberra Hospital, Royal Darwin Hospital, and Westmead Hospital. Dr Cheng undertook advanced glaucoma fellowship training under the mentorship of Professors Andrew White and Paul Healey at Westmead Hospital.

As a certified Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) specialist, Dr. Cheng has extensive experience with the latest surgical techniques including:

  • MINIject supraciliary device
  • Preserflo MicroShunt
  • iStent Inject W and iStent infinite
  • Hydrus Microstent
  • XEN Gel Stent
  • Gonioscopy-Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy (GATT)

This comprehensive surgical skillset enables personalized treatment approaches tailored to each patient's specific needs and glaucoma type.

Her clinical interests extend into research, where she is an investigator in the development of nanoparticle-based therapeutics for glaucoma neuroprotection and wound healing.

Dr Cheng has a strong commitment to global health and has worked and volunteered in international settings including Gizo Hospital (Solomon Islands), with Medical Sailing Ministries (Vanuatu), and as a Global Impact Fellow with Unite for Sight in Bihar, India.

She has contributed to ophthalmic literature and has presented her work at national and international conferences, including:

  • Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists Annual Congress
  • Australian Society for Medical Research Scientific Meeting
  • Australia and New Zealand Glaucoma Society Meeting
  • European Neuro-Ophthalmological Society Meeting

Her leadership in clinical quality improvement includes chairing the Ophthalmology Department's Morbidity and Mortality meeting at Westmead Hospital and co-designing the Intravitreal injection prescription register at Royal Darwin Hospital.

Dr Cheng is passionate about education. She is a member of the RANZCO Curriculum Committee, and supervises clinical and research students from the University of Sydney.

Outside of work, Dr Cheng enjoys a vibrant home life filled with gardening, home improvement projects, and spontaneous dance parties with her husband and two young children. She's also known to enjoy a good karaoke session — preferably with a fun playlist and family backup vocals.
