He was exposed to the wide range of regional and rural eye conditions with many of these managed locally, especially with the later arrival of visiting ophthalmic sub-specialist. He was also a clinical lecturer in ophthalmology in Sydney Medical School at the Dubbo Rural Training Unit.

He graduated in Medicine at Sydney University in 1973. Following residential medical officer training at Royal Newcastle Hospital, he commenced ophthalmic training at this hospital. He completed his training at The Sydney Eye Hospital.

His work now involves general assessment of ophthalmic patients using all the modern modalities of investigation. If needed, this allows patients to be directed to the most appropriate ophthalmic sub-specialist, who has advanced training in the patient condition.
