Pioneering outpatient surgery for cataracts

In 1998, Dr Lim Boon Siong, who had some vision problems, was deeply impressed with the success of the LASIK treatment he underwent in Australia in 1998.

A year later, he founded VISTA Laser Eye Centre, pioneering the LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) vision correction in Malaysia.

As he did not have the requisite medical background to perform surgery nor was there available funding, Dr Lim established a partnership with a surgeon and ingeniously negotiated a three-year credit period for the LASIK equipment from suppliers to bring the virtually unheard-of treatment to Malaysia.

VISTA was officially opened in August 1999, and was the first dedicated LASIK centre in Malaysia that specialises in LASIK vision correction. Both the founding directors together with Dr. Aloysius Low had undergone LASIK in 1998 and 2000 respectively.

Since then, Vista Laser Eye Centre has become the pioneer in many vision correction technologies including cataract surgeries, having performed over 30,000 LASIK procedures. To ensure that these vision correction procedures are available and affordable to all, Mr Lim has set up a rural community eye clinic and a free cataract surgery program for the poor. Vista Laser has won several excellence awards.

Their philosophy is to have a facility that is equipped with the latest technology that offers minimal discomfort, significant less side effects and excellent results.

To date, VISTA performed over 8,000 LASIK procedures in Malaysia and has expanded its vision correction to include Nearvision CK which helps people above 40s reduce their needs for reading glasses and Cataract Removal Surgery for senior citizen whose natural lens become cloudy and need to be replaced.
